Should You Mention Income in a Marriage Biodata?
Income can be relevant to a discussion about work, lifestyle and future plans, but it is not a required field in every marriage biodata. Whether to include it depends on the candidate’s comfort, the purpose of the first introduction and the expectations of the families involved. A useful profile is transparent without exposing financial records.

Decide whether the figure adds useful context
Some candidates include a broad annual income because financial planning and location are important parts of a future household. Others prefer to discuss it after an initial conversation. Both choices can be reasonable. Do not include income merely because a template has a blank field; optional fields should serve the person using the document.
If income is included, the figure should be accurate, recent enough to be meaningful and clearly labelled. A number without a period or currency can be misunderstood. Salary, business revenue, profit and take-home pay are not the same thing. Choose wording that describes the number honestly rather than using the largest available figure.
How to word income clearly
A concise example is “Annual gross salary: approximately ₹18 lakh” or “Self-employed; income varies by year.” These are fictional examples, not recommended income levels. If the amount is in another currency, name the currency and say whether the figure is annual. For self-employed candidates, do not present business turnover as personal earnings. If income varies significantly, a broad range or a note that it varies may be more honest than a precise figure.
Avoid vague phrases such as “high package” or “very well settled.” They communicate little and may create assumptions. Also avoid wording that implies that a person’s value is determined by earnings. Education, work, responsibilities, plans and compatibility are broader than one number.
What to keep private
Never attach salary slips, bank statements, tax returns, account numbers or investment statements to an introductory biodata. These documents contain sensitive information and are not appropriate for a widely forwarded profile. A biodata should not include employer login details, confidential business information or a full home address.
If a serious discussion requires financial information, agree on what is relevant and share it directly through an appropriate private channel. Be cautious if someone asks for money, account access, identity documents or urgent financial help as proof of commitment. A biodata is not a financial verification service.
Special situations
For an NRI candidate, identify the currency and whether the figure is annual. A salary in dollars, pounds or dirhams should not be compared with a rupee amount without considering location, tax, living costs and exchange rates. Do not imply a particular lifestyle from gross salary alone.
For a business owner, income can fluctuate. A short description of the business and the candidate’s role may be more informative than a misleading fixed number. For someone changing careers, studying or taking a break, it is acceptable to focus on the current situation and future plans without making apologetic claims.
Sample wording and a quick check
Optional wording: “Career: Senior analyst, Bengaluru. Income details can be discussed privately as the conversation progresses.” Or, if the candidate prefers to include a figure: “Annual gross salary: approximately ₹X, subject to normal variation.” Replace X only with a true amount.
Before sending, ask: Is the number accurate? Is the currency clear? Does it represent salary, business income or another measure? Am I comfortable with relatives forwarding this file? If any answer is no, revise or omit the figure.
Frequently asked questions
Is income compulsory in a marriage biodata?
No. It is optional and should be included only when useful and comfortable for the candidate.
Should I include take-home salary or gross salary?
If you include a number, label it clearly. Do not mix gross salary, take-home pay and business turnover.
Can I share salary slips with the biodata?
Avoid attaching financial documents to an introductory biodata. Discuss verification privately if appropriate later.
